What is Oracy?
Oracy brings together thinking through talk, listening carefully and expressing ideas clearly to an audience. Word choice, tone, the structure of a message and body language all contribute. The aim is meaningful, two-way communication across different situations.
How does it connect with English learning?
English learners need opportunities to use their vocabulary and language structures for a purpose: explaining a proposal, giving reasons, asking questions or responding to another person’s idea. An Oracy approach connects language work with speaking opportunities, audience awareness and feedback.
What does practice look like?
- Choose a communication purpose, such as explaining an idea or solving a problem together.
- Explore useful vocabulary and a short model of the conversation.
- Speak, listen and respond to the other person’s contribution.
- Use feedback to improve one aspect, such as clarity, tone or structure, and try again.
Who do we work with?
We offer school speaking and listening programmes, teacher development in classroom talk and English language teaching, and professional coaching for presentations, interviews, negotiations and Business English. OracyNet and Oracy Library support speaking practice and digital reading.
Our connection to research
Founder Dr. İshak Ersin Kıraç’s interests include cognitive load, instructional design, English learning and Oracy. Our research page links to academic records, conference programmes and first-hand posts. We connect these interests with practical work across the United Kingdom and Türkiye.
